Storying Climate through Mobilities

Storying Climate (Through) Mobilities took place on 13 December 2024 at the University of Amsterdam as a space where stories, emotions, and shared experiences converged to make sense of climate through the lens of mobilities. From the moment we gathered, the room filled with energy. Through playful icebreakers, we began connecting and sharing where we came from, where we’d been, and how climate shaped those journeys. In Story Circles, small groups listened deeply to each other’s personal accounts, no longer than 600 words, weaving themes of belonging, disruption, loss, and hope.

Emotions surfaced.

Patterns emerged.

Unexpected insights sparked reflection.

Fuelled by coffee and curiosity, we shifted into co-creation. Each group crafted a collective story, guided by prompts that invited us to imagine new climates, new solidarities, and new ways of being with climate in motion. In the final session, Storying Seeds, participants shared their creations aloud, exploring not just the content of the stories told, but also how the process of storytelling could help us make sense of our moving climate trajectories. Could our stories travel beyond the workshop room? We ended the day with open hearts and thoughtful steps, walking together through the winter streets to dinner, continuing conversations sparked earlier. Workshop organisers Karen Paiva Henrique, Maggi Leung, and Hebe Verrest led the process, inviting deep and trustful engagement at every stage.

And yet, this is not the end. If anything, it’s the beginning.

What if these stories didn’t just live in memory? What if they took shape in a fanzine (handmade, collective, imperfect) as a juncture where words, sketches, fragments, and ideas continue to move further?

This fanzine aims to provide a space for everyone (participants who were there and also those who weren’t) to return to the stories we told, and to imagine new ones.

This workshop was made possible with kind support from the Amsterdam Research Centre for Migration (ARC-M) and the Governance and Inclusive Development research group at the University of Amsterdam.
